Jenny Holzer: The Future Please

Opening reception for a show featuring works by New York-based conceptual artist Jenny Holzer. The Future Please features selections from Holzer's work from the 1970s to the present in addition to her latest body of work, the Redaction Paintings, which are based on declassified and other sensitive U.S. documents and inspired by Russian Constructivism.On view through October 27, 2012.

Artists for Obama

This fundraising event benefits the Obama Victory fund and features the work of artists including John Baldessari, Frank Gehry, Jasper Johns, Susan Rothenberg, and Richard Serra. A portfolio of limited edition prints by all 19 artists is available. The evening features guest speaker Valerie Jarrett, senior advisor to President Obama, music by DJ Eddie Ruscha, and food by a number of local chefs including Michael Voltaggio, Neal Fraser, and Suzanne Goin. Tickets cost $300/person and $500/couple and can be purchased by emailing artforobama@geminigel.com.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 15

Fix It Up Too
Blum & Poe (Culver City)

This SASSAS benefit auction event reprises The Fix-It-Up Show, a project first developed by artists Jeffrey Vallance and Michael Uhlenkott for a 1981 exhibition at LACE in which artists were asked to contribute works for Vallance and Uhlenkott to alter or "fix." For Fix It Up Too, both artists reprise their roles as "fixers." The free event features live performances by the Harmonica Rascals, Fat and Fucked Up, and Scott Benzel, who, along with Mark Hagen, will close the event.

Ann Trondson: Rehearsal/Recording
MAK Center for Art and Architecture (West Hollywood)

Developed and performed by Ann Trondson, Rehearsal/Recording explores how the architectually unique Kings Road House may have been experienced since it was built-in 1922. The audience for Rehearsal/Recording will sit in the King's Road House's garden, eavesdropping on both a rehearsal and a recording session by an unseen string quintet playing inside the house. This performance is free and open to the public.

Ken Price Sculpture: A Retrospective
LACMA (Miracle Mile)
10 a.m.-7 p.m.
Opening day of the retrospective exhibition featuring over 100 works by the prolific Los Angeles ceramics artist Kenneth Price (1935-2012). On view in the Resnick Pavilion through January 6, 2013, the exhibition traces the development of Price's sculptural practice from his luminously glazed ovoid forms to his suggestive, molten-like slumps, positioning him within the larger narrative of modern American sculpture. This sculptural retrospective honors the late artist's creativity, originality, and revolutionary art practice.

"Is L.A. the Creative or Anti-Creative City?"

Presented in conjunction with SOC(i)AL: Art + People, a discussion series on socially engaged art in Los Angeles, this free event features Elizabeth Currid and Sarah Schrank speaking about the effects that regulations and laws have on the arts. The talk will be moderated by USC's David Sloane.
