A small airplane crashed on a highway in an Atlanta suburb on Friday morning.
Four people died in the crash around 10 a.m. on Interstate 285 near DeKalb-Peachtree Airport, from which the plane had just taken off, according to local news reports.
The pilot was reportedly heard saying "We're going down."
"Preliminarily, we're being told that there were four souls on board," Eric Jackson, a spokesman for the DeKalb County Fire Department, told The Huffington Post.
It's unclear what was the destination of the flight, he added.
Jackson said that the plane hit a center divider on the highway, but that there appeared to be no other damage on the ground.
Passersby posted photos on social media showing a plume of dark smoke rising.
Dunwoody Police tweeted that it had shut down eastbound traffic on I-285 near Atlanta, and photos tweeted by WSB-TV showed bumper-to-bumper traffic.
Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen told HuffPost that the plane that crashed was a Piper PA-32 aircraft, and that the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.
