A Spanish handball player sucker-punched a referee during a match Sunday and may face criminal charges, according to reports.
Eddy Cordoba of BM Vinaros can be seen on video objecting to the ejection of a teammate, then flooring referee Daniel Orts as he turns his head away.
Police were called to the arena in Alicante, Spain, and Orts, who was treated at a hospital, said he would report the alleged assault, the Mirror reported.
"The blow has left me in shock," Orts told El Periodico Mediterraneo. " ... I didn't see it coming."
Per outlets, Gabriel Martorell, manager of BM Vinaros, said afterward: "We deeply regret what happened and there’s no possible defense for an assault of this kind."
