âStar Warsâ fans whoâve been shipping Poe and Finn since the release of 2015âČs âThe Force Awakensâ are hoping this yearâs installment will offer some insight on the former characterâs sexuality.
Oscar Isaac, who portrays X-wing fighter pilot Poe Dameron in the franchise, commented on the theory in a video interview with Colliderâs Steve Weintraub published Tuesday. The star avoided confirming or denying any claims about his character possibly identifying as LGBTQ but said he was âvery openâ to it.
When Weintraub asked how Isaac felt about fansâ enthusiasm in regards to Poeâs possible sexuality, the actor said he was happy to know people connected to this character.
âWhat it means to me is that people can see themselves in a hero like this, in a movie like this â which I love â not only LGBT but Latinos, that there is a representation out there for that,â he said.
Despite Isaac being open to the possibility of Poe being an LGBTQ character, he seemed to confirm no clear answer would be given when âStar Wars: The Last Jediâ premieres on Dec. 15.
âAs to actually seeing how that manifests itself in Poe in this film that isnât going to necessarily be a clear story point in this one,â he added. âBut as an actor, and for me, Iâm very open to those possible story lines and I donât think it needs to be nailed down in any kind of traditional way.â
J.J. Abrams, who directed âThe Force Awakensâ and executive produced âThe Last Jedi,â has given some hope to fans who wish to see LGBTQ characters in the âStar Warsâ universe.
âWhen I talk about inclusivity itâs not excluding gay characters,â Abrams told The Daily Beast in February 2016. âItâs about inclusivity. So of course. I would love it. To me, the fun of âStar Warsâ is the glory of possibility. So it seems insanely narrow-minded and counterintuitive to say that there wouldnât be a homosexual character in that world.â
