Sierra Bradway lost her father, an Indianapolis police officer, four years ago in the line of duty.
But that didn’t stop the 17-year-old from making him a part of her prom.
Sierra and her date, Brock Spayd, made a plan to take photos at her dad’s gravesite before they headed out for prom, the Indianapolis Star reports.
But when the two arrived at Indianapolis’s Crown Hill Cemetery on Saturday, they were surprised to find dozens of police officers ready to pay their respects and celebrate Sierra’s big day.
Brock’s mother, a captain in the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, came up with the plan after she learned from her son that he and Sierra were visiting the cemetery, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said in a press release.
Sierra’s father, Officer Rod Bradway was killed in September 2013, after he forced his way into an apartment where a woman held at gunpoint was screaming for help. Bradway ended up saving the woman’s life, but was fatally shot.
A video posted on the department’s Facebook page shows a shocked Sierra stepping out of an SUV to find two officers on horseback and a crowd of cops around her father’s grave.
”There were a lot of laughs, some tears, but most importantly, there was love,” the department said in a moving video. “Sierra, we know your father is smiling from heaven. Know that your Blue Line Family will always be here for you.”
