Police Chase On Palmetto Expressway Ends With Crash, Shooting In Miami Gardens (VIDEO)

WATCH: High-Speed Police Chase Ends In Crash, Shooting

A roughly 22-mile high-speed chase up the Palmetto Expressway ended Friday afternoon with two passengers shot by police after the driver crashed into a fence.

Aerial footage showed a silver Mercedes SUV swerving in and out of traffic, speeding from the Don Shula Expressway northbound onto the Palmetto before the driver crashed into a box truck, briefly became stuck in traffic, then drove the wrong way down an on-ramp before fleeing through a residential Miami Gardens neighborhood.

After the vehicle slammed into a fence on NW 167th Street west of NW 27th Avenue, the driver hopped the fence and ran into a wooded embankment as Miami-Dade Police swarmed the scene, guns drawn. He and a second male passenger were shot multiple times by police and airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center; authorities said one man is in critical condition and the other stable.

Two other passengers, one of whom was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital with minor injuries, were taken into custody.

Authorities said the pursuit began when officers responded to a suspicious persons report near 9221 N. Kendall Drive and the driver of the car struck a police vehicle before fleeing the scene, then appeared to toss a handgun from the car before it crashed.

The Palmetto was shut down in both directions between 37th Ave and 17th Ave as police investigated the scene.

This is a developing story.
