An armed robber who held up a Florida pizza takeout restaurant last month apologetically told staff he was only doing it because his "kids need Christmas."

Witnesses said the unidentified masked man was "very polite" when he asked a worker at Little Caesars in Deerfield Beach to open the safe and registers on Dec. 9, according to a statement by Broward Sheriff's Office.

Surveillance camera footage released Friday shows the suspect wielding a black handgun as he enters the business. Police said he initially asked the restaurant worker to "please" open the safe and give him the money, but it was empty.

He then asked her to open the registers, and emptied the contents into a black backpack before fleeing the scene.

The suspect added he was "sorry for doing this" but said that his "kids need Christmas," per the police statement.

The man is described as black with a light complexion, in his early 20s, and about 5 feet 8 inches tall with a medium frame and mustache. He was wearing a dark gray sweatshirt with "Nike" in black letters and had a gold grill on his teeth.

There is a $3,000 reward for any information that leads to his capture.
