Porn Studios Use Tax Day To Raise Money To Fight Law Mandating Condoms On Set

Porn Studios Make 'Tax Day' A Little Sexier

Porn companies plan to make tax day a little sexier this year.

Vivid Entertainment, the industry's largest production house, said Tuesday that 80 percent of the top adult film studios have joined together to pledge their tax-day earnings to the fight a law mandating condom use on set.

HotMovies.com, an online adult film site, organized the event to benefit the industry lobbying group, Free Speech Coalition, the LA Times reports.

"Ordinarily you think of April 15th as 'tax day,' but this year it means something even more important for the adult industry -- it's a chance for us all to exercise our rights and overturn a ridiculous law that affects an entire industry," said Marci Hirsch, vice president of Vivid, LA Weekly reports.

"For any consumers that have been planning on streaming or downloading a hot new film, we urge you to do it through HotMovies.com on April 15th so you can help this vital cause," she said.

Nearly 100 adult film studios have pledged to donate their income from the sale of movies on April 15 to the fundraising effort, said James Clybert, director of business development for HotMovies. HotMovies is matching contributions up to $10,000, according to XBiz.

Measure B, which mandates condom use in porn production in LA County, went into effect in December after more than 56 percent of LA County voters approved it.

Many in the porn industry think that condoms are unnecessary because the industry already conducts regular STD checks. They also say that condoms would hurt their profit and drive the industry either out of LA or underground, creating even more unsafe conditions.

Perhaps most loudly, some adult film performers have said that Measure B infringes on their rights and freedom to do what they want with their bodies.

The measure was spearheaded by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, which says that STDs in the industry are a public health concern and that actors' safety is not being respected. Some porn actors, particularly those who have contracted HIV on set, agree.

The foundation filed a complaint with the county in March after receiving an anonymous letter and videotape filmed by someone on an Immoral Productions set. The letter and video showed that the adult film company did not use condoms on set, the foundation said.
