Designer Prabal Gurung is teaming up with CNN Hero of the Year Anuradha Koirala to join the fight against human trafficking and sex slavery.
The designer, who was born in Singapore and raised in Nepal before coming to the US to launch his career, has been named a Goodwill Ambassador for Koirala's organization, Maiti Nepal.
"I feel extremely honored, grateful and humbled that I have been chosen to represent Maiti Nepal as its Goodwill Ambassador," he tweeted Tuesday.
Maiti Nepal has rescued over 12,000 women and girls from sex slavery, according to CNN, which honored Koirala with its ultimate CNN Hero award last year. At the CNN ceremony, Koirala was introduced by Demi Moore, who has frequently worn Gurung's designs on the red carpet.
"Since 1993, [Koirala] has helped rescue more than 12,000 women and girls," Moore said at the time. "Through her organization Maiti Nepal, she has provided more than a shelter for these girls and young women, she has created a home. It is a place for them to heal, go to school, learn a skill, and for some who are infected with HIV/AIDS, it is the place where they can spend their days surrounded by love."
"A society [free from] human trafficking is possible and we must realise that it is our responsibility to make this world a better place for all mankind," the designer told The Kathmandu Post. "By simply stating our desire, we sow the seeds of great change," says Gurung.
Earlier this month, Gurung was honored by USA Network as part of its "Character Approved" program.
