Prabal Gurung has come a long way since his humble childhood in Nepal. These days, the prolific designer outfits everyone from Kate Hudson to Kate Middleton. And now, with his Target collaboration, he can even outfit the rest of us commoners on the cheap.
But don't think Prabal's forgotten his roots. Even today, 14 years after leaving his hometown, he still carries with him an important piece of advice he picked up while watching daytime television as a kid. Yup, the inspired fashion figure takes advice from Oprah Winfrey -- just like the rest of us. He tells CBS This Morning today:
"I was in Nepal and I had watched Oprah Winfrey's show. I had no idea, as a kid in Nepal, who she was, but I remember watching an episode of hers about living your dreams. I still remember telling my sister, 'You know what, I've never been to America, but I want to give it a shot. If it's a mistake, at least it's my mistake.'"
Well, that risk paid off, huh? The rest of his chat consisted of Prabal dishing about sending dresses to the White House for FLOTUS consideration, so need we provide any more proof that Mr. Gurung has arrived? Even better, he's still humble enough to praise the designers who inspired him along the way, gushing to CBS last week about how Diane von Furstenburg is an "amazing diva."
So on behalf of the style world and all Target shoppers: Thank you, Oprah.
