Pregnant Teen Shot In Chicago, Police Department Overtime OKed After Violent Weekend

Pregnant Teen Among 7 Shot Overnight Tuesday Amid Homicide Spike

A pregnant teenager was among at least seven people shot, two of them fatally, in Chicago overnight Tuesday on the heels of a weekend where at least eight people wee killed and 46 others wounded by gun violence.

Just after 9 p.m. Monday, a 17-year-old girl was struck by a bullet that flew through the window of her home on the 7000 block of South Maplewood Avenue in the city's Marquette Park neighborhood, NBC Chicago reports. The bullet hit the pregnant teen in the shoulder.

The teen was taken to the hospital in serious condition, but her baby is expected to survive the shooting. Police believe the girl was hit by a stray bullet from gang members exchanging gunfire near her home, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Killed by gunfire overnight Tuesday were Davonte Flennoy, 20, and an unidentified man, thought to be in his late 30s or early 40s. Flennoy was fatally shot just before 11 p.m. in the 6300 block of South Rockwell Street, about a mile away from where the teen mother-to-be was wounded just two hours earlier, according to the Tribune.

The unidentified man was found laying in a vacant lot in the 3900 block of South Federal Street around 3 a.m. Tuesday. Police have made no arrests in any of the shootings.

Over the previous weekend, at least eight people died, including a 16-year-old boy, and 46 others were wounded in shootings throughout Chicago. From late Saturday into early Sunday alone, 20 people were wounded by gunfire in Chicago. Between Jan. 1 and late May, there were 203 homicides in Chicago, up more than 50 percent over the same period last year.

Following the violent weekend, the Chicago Police Department has announced the rollout of a violence reduction overtime initiative allowing officers to work extra, longer shifts Thursdays through Mondays, CBS Chicago reports. Police operated a similar initiative last year.

Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said Monday the initiative will entail an additional "couple of hundred officers" working Chicago's neighborhoods, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

McCarthy also said a "high deployment" of officers will be assigned to the city's downtown area to curb additional "mob-style" attacks like ones seen last weekend.

Father Michael Pfleger on Monday led a rally against the recent violence at his St. Sabina church.

"The Wild Wild West is coming to the Midwest... Chicago is a poster boy for violence around the country," Pfleger said Monday, ABC Chicago reports. "When we hear on the news, these are not just numbers. These are human beings."
