Pregnant Woman, Infant Injured In Separate South Side Chicago Shootings

Pregnant Woman, Infant Wounded In Separate Chicago Shootings

Less than a week after a pregnant teen was fatally shot, another pregnant woman and an infant were wounded in gun violence on Chicago's South Side.

On Monday afternoon, a 21-year-old woman was in a car with her mother and boyfriend in the Roseland neighborhood when an unknown shooter approached the vehicle and opened fire, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. The incident occurred about 3:45 p.m. in the 11300 block of South Calumet Avenue, and the woman was shot in her lower right hip.

The woman's boyfriend and mother, who were not injured, drove her to Roseland Community Hospital, where she is listed in stable condition. A motive in the incident was not immediately known.

Early Tuesday, just seven miles from the Roseland shooting, an infant was wounded by gunfire near 84th Street and Muskegon Avenue, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The infant was with a 15-year-old female relative when shots were fired nearby the Tribunereports. The child was shot and has been hospitalized in critical condition. Information regarding the infant's exact age or gender has not been released and nobody is in custody.

Though Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy reported a decrease in violent crime so far this summer, multiple children have been wounded or killed by gunfire in the city recently, including the fatal "execution style" shooting of 14-year-old Joseph Prince and wounding of 9-year-old DeShawn McKenzie in separate incidents Sunday. Both shootings occurred as an anti-violence march was underway in Englewood in response to last week's shooting death of 17-year-old Charinez Jefferson, who was six months pregnant. The baby, her second child, was successfully delivered and is in critical but stable condition.

Timothy Jones, 18, has been charged in Jefferson's murder. No arrests have been made in the August 7 murder of 6-year-old Arianna Gibson, who was sleeping on her grandmother's couch when shots were fired into the home, killing the child.
