President Clinton Tells US Mayors: Green Your Cities

The latest celebrity to speak at the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Miami, former President Bill Clinton turned up Sunday and urged the mayors gathered there to maximize energy efficiency, an effort that will help both the environment and the economy.

Clinton's address at the conference continued the sharp focus on green issues that has colored the four-day meeting: from climate change and rising gas prices to an anti-bottled water campaign and sustainable development.

It marked one of his first public appearances since his wife Sen. Hillary Clinton suspended her presidential campaign earlier this month. Clinton spoke the day after Sen. Barack Obama, the presumed Democratic nominee, addressed the conference Saturday.

Clinton said if city leaders take advantage of loan programs to refit their buildings to make them more energy efficient, they could reduce their carbon footprint, create jobs and save money.
