Aysun Aydemir, an English teacher gave birth to a baby in an elective caesarean procedure yesterday in Turkey. Right after the procedure, she was detained at the hospital and subsequently arrested by a court and put in pretrial detention with her three-day-old baby.

She was arrested on the same charges that the American Pastor Andrew Brunson was charged on October 2016. The likelihood of the “membership in an armed terrorist organization” of this lady is as ridiculous of this American pastor.

President Trump should ask his counterpart not only the reason of the arrest of this noble American Pastor but the arrests of 17.000 women like Aysun Aydemir.

This level of the state violence against women in Turkey is very disturbing especially when we consider the lack of free media and independent judiciary. State violence against women in Turkey is so visible, nauseating and so insidious that it puts many people in doubt of having been abused and ashamed of their very humanity.

Dear Mr. President Trump,

American State Department is well-known with its archive and documentation system which easily could enlist the great majority of the human rights abuses and state violence cases against women.

More than 17,000 women in Turkey, many with small children, have been jailed in an unprecedented crackdown and subjected to torture and ill-treatment in detention centers and prisons for months.

The lack of democracy and human rights in Turkey make these women the most vulnerable and largest conglomeration of victims in the society. The American Government should not overlook the rights of these people, particularly during the times when they are powerless and voiceless.
