After long using polo matches to raise money for charity, Prince Harry is now also turning to rugby to raise awareness for a very special cause.
The prince announced his support Thursday of Rugby For Heroes, an organization that encourages servicemen and servicewomen to get involved with the rough sport as a way to transition back to civilian life, the Daily Beast reports.
“As a serving member of Her Majesty’s Forces and an avid rugby fan, I am delighted to hear about the valuable work of Rugby for Heroes," Prince Harry told the Daily Mirror of the nonprofit his cousin-in-law Mike Tindall founded. "The military and rugby share distinctive core values -- leadership, respect, courage and camaraderie -- which is why the rugby community can play such an important role in supporting our armed servicemen and women to make the successful transition to civilian life.”
For his long-standing commitment to helping returning troops, Prince Harry is getting an esteemed award.
He’s slated to receive the Atlantic Council Award for Distinguished Humanitarian Leadership for his charitable work with wounded servicemen in Washington this month, the Associated Press reports.
But veterans aren’t the only recipient of the prince’s goodwill.
During the recent Diamond Jubliee Tour, which celebrated Queen Elizabeth's 60-year-reign, Prince Harry raised funds for Sentebale, an orphanage he established in Africa with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho in his mother's memory.
“’Sentebale' means 'forget me not,' -- simple case of not forgetting the children," Prince Harry told CBS. "And also, not forgetting our mothers who both princes and I lost at a fairly young age."
