Basketball player Akil Mitchell went up for a rebound Thursday and came down with a frightening eye injury in Auckland, New Zealand.
His eyeball appeared to pop out of its socket, prompting broadcasters to call for immediate emergency help in the video below (warning for a brief graphic moment).
Mitchell, playing for the New Zealand Breakers of the National Basketball League, was apparently poked by Cairns center Nnanna Egwu, causing his left eye to suddenly burst forth, Australian Associated Press wrote.
The 24-year-old former University of Virginia player was treated for 15 minutes on the floor before being taken to the hospital, AP noted.
Thankfully, Breakers general manager Dillon Boucher told the media that Mitchell had been discharged.“While there is some damage, the early reports are very positive that the injury is not as serious as first feared,” he said in a statement reported by Sports Illustrated. Mitchell later tweeted that his vision was working.
And get this: Mitchell told AP on Friday he could still see right after the injury and that his sight was like that of “a chameleon, how they can see different directions.”
