'Psych' Premiere: Despereaux Brings Out Shawn's Indiana Jones

"Psych" (Wed., 10 p.m. EST on USA) returned for the second half of its sixth season, bringing along Cary Elwes' always enjoyable Despereaux. As much fun as he is in the role, it's even more fun to watch Shawn fawning all over him. And then, when Despereaux apparently met his doom in a boat explosion, it was a genuine emotional journey for Shawn trying to process the loss of someone he sees as an idol.

But as this is "Psych," they kept it pretty light throughout. Plus, even though DNA evidence said otherwise, the audience was backing Shawn's steadfast conviction that Despereaux had survived that blast, and that this was all part of his master plan. Shawn's deft snatching of the dagger Despereaux was "killed" for proved fortuitous, as did the fight he and Gus got into that revealed the hidden key at its tip.

The prize this episode was artwork by Rembrandt, and the key set off a very short, but nevertheless Indiana Jones-esque treasure hunt. Shawn used his skills at observation and a bit of luck to find that the keyhole was on a bench in the garden, and then to see the opening it revealed on the grounds. But this only led to the ashes of the wealthy man who supposedly had the Rembrandt art.

Shawn then figured out this meant that it was in the man's tomb they'd find the real treasure. And they did. They found the paintings that the art enthusiast himself had painted. That was no real treasure at all. At least, that's what the boys thought when they left the scene. The close of the episode revealed that Despereaux had known better and probably all along, as it showed him wiping off the amateur work on top to reveal the art of Rembrandt beneath.

"Psych" continues on Wednesdays at 10 p.m. EST on USA.
