The 16-month-old puppy, named Phoenix, was doused in lighter fluid and set on fire by the two men. Phoenix suffered burns to 30 percent of his body, according to the Examiner.

Ziegler pleaded guilty to felony aggravated animal cruelty and was sentenced to two years in prison.

Last Monday morning, Ziegler was shot in the groin and buttocks area, police told Buffalo News. The animal abuser is listed in stable condition.

Phoenix was adopted last year by one of the veterinary staff who treated the injured pup.

No arrests have been made in the shooting.
