Purdue, Indiana Baseball Brawl: Benches Clear At Big Ten Championship Game (VIDEO)

Benches Clear At Big Ten Title Game

The Big Ten Baseball Title game between Indiana and Purdue on Sunday was marred by a bench-clearing melee that took place right after the decisive run was scored.

The game was tied at five in the top of the ninth when Purdue got baserunners on the corners with just one out. The drama kicked into high gear when senior infielder Eric Charles hit a chopper down the third base line. The Purdue runner on third got caught in a rundown as he broke for home. He got tagged out but was able to keep the play alive long enough for the other baserunner to get from first to third on the play. Indiana tried to get the runner at third but the throw got away from shortstop Michael Basil, who was covering the bag. The botched throw allowed the go-ahead run to cross the plate.

Amidst the confusion, Charles tried to make it all the way to third. He slid hard into the bag but the out was recorded. Basil took exception to Charles' hard slide and a brawl broke out. The benches quickly emptied and punches were thrown as the umpires intervened and tried to separate the teams.

Two players were ejected, including Charles for a flagrant slide. An umpire had to reportedly be removed as well after getting hit in the back.

The Boilermakers held on to the 6-5 lead to win their first ever Big Ten Tournament title.
