Congratulations to Yayoi Kusama, Priestess of the Polka Dot, for being named one of Time's 100 Most Influential People of 2016. [Cue an infinity net of polka dots lifting the wigged goddess into the cosmos.]
Kusama, now 87 years old, has been making art since she was 10. Living in Japan, Kusama began experiencing polka-dotted hallucinations, visions that ate up every space and surface in her life. She translated these phantom spots into expansive artworks with spots spreading like a beautiful disease to every inch of the space. The dots simultaneously represent the insignificance of the individual, the wholeness of the cosmos, the earth, the sun, the moon, me, you, and everything in between.
While Kusama is the only visual artist recognized, The 100 also included Hamilton mastermind Lin-Manuel Miranda and billionaire collector Eli Broad, whose public museum The Broad opened in Los Angeles this year.
Congratulations to all the important folks honored on this year's list and especially to her holiness Ms. K. Feel her brilliant energy through the strangest and most wonderful roundup of inspirational quotes in the game.
