Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) made the case Sunday for why his views mesh well with the American people, taking a dig at Congress in the process.
Pressed by Fox News Host Chris Wallace about a lack of support for his budget within the Senate, Paul claimed that lawmakers are the ones who are behind the times.
“I think the legislature is about 10 years behind the public,” Paul said. “I would argue the Senate is not up to date with what the people really want.”
Earlier in the interview, Wallace questioned how Paul could compete as a candidate who is viewed by some as more left than President Barack Obama on drones, but more right than Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) on the budget. Paul dismissed the current political spectrum as one that "doesn't always work for people."
"There are all kinds of issues that don't neatly fit in the left-right paradigm," Paul said.
Paul eked out a victory in last Saturday's CPAC Straw Poll, edging fellow Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) 25 to 23 percent. In his March 14 CPAC speech, Paul vowed that "the GOP of old has grown stale," adding that liberty would be a key premise to the party's future prosperity.
"If we're going to have a Republican Party that can win, liberty needs to be the backbone of the GOP," Paul said.
