DuPage County GOP Chairman and Illinois state Rep. Randy Ramey pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor DUI charge Monday following a drunk driving citation he received in August.
The congressman was pulled over on Aug. 28 for improper lane usage on his way home from a restaurant and bar in his home town of Carol Stream after police observed him crossing the center line. A breathalyzer test registered his blood-alcohol content at 0.17 percent, more than twice the legal limit, and he was cited for driving under the influence.
Ramey was fined $1,750 and ordered to perform 100 hours of community service, the Chicago Tribune reports. He has also been placed on one year of supervision and ordered to attend a victim impact panel. Political work will not be counted toward the community service element of his sentence, Ramey's attorney told the Tribune.
“I regret and take full responsibility for my actions, and I am prepared to face the consequences,” Ramey said in a statement in August. “I am deeply sorry to disappoint my family and my constituents.”
Ramey became DuPage County party chairman this summer, though his position won't be permanent unless he is elected at the April GOP convention. He will be running against Republican incumbent Franco Coladipietro in the 2012 election as a result of redistricting.
