So much has already been said about Ray Rice in the two days since TMZ leaked explosive video of the running back knocking his wife unconscious in an Atlantic City casino elevator. Some want Rice banned from the NFL for life. Others think the Baltimore Ravens' release of Rice only does harm to the victim, his wife Janay.
ESPN's Mike Golic, co-host of the wildly popular "Mike and Mike" radio show, stopped by HuffPost Live on Wednesday to talk football and his work with Chili's to help fund St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Inevitably, the conversation turned to Rice.
Golic said Rice certainly deserves whatever punishment he ultimately gets — along with being cut, Rice is suspended indefinitely — but thinks the troubled running back should be allowed to return to football at some point. He told host Marc Lamont Hill:
People say, 'Should he never play again?' I'm a firm believer [that] in things like domestic violence, DUIs, you're putting people in danger, I think the hammer should come down on you. I think the penalty should be huge. A punishment for a player needs to be that, to make it substantial. But when they serve that penalty ... if Ray Rice is out for a year and the commissioner thinks he can be eligible to come back and somebody picks him up, I have no problem with that either. Now, you do that a couple of times, forget it. You're done. I don't need you around the league anymore.
Golic played eight years in the NFL from 1986 to 1993, his most notable time coming with the Philadelphia Eagles.
