Space NK is the antidote to the Macy's beauty counter -- offering rad, rare, mostly overseas-based beauty products you can't get anywhere else. Look for cult-fave brands like Eve Lom, Oribe, Rococo Nail Apparel, Serge Normant and the store's private label, which makes everything from candles to fragrances.

Stop scoffing. Just because you remember Ann Taylor as the ultimate purveyor of frump, doesn't mean she still is. A girl -- and a retailer -- can change. And man, this one has done a 180 for its new, fashion-y concept stores -- the first of which has popped open at South Coast Plaza last month. Zero frump, all style.

New York denim brand Rubin & Chapelle has opened a new boutique at the Malibu Country Mart, featuring its selection of sexy jeans -- which Jessica Alba, Gwyneth Paltrow and Sienna Miller frequently don. And we all know what kind of lives they're leading.

Boutique knitwear company Stacia, which specializes in lightweight sweaters you can wear year-round, has launced a bungalow boutique just off Montana Avenue in Santa Monica.

O'Neill has debuted a new store inspired by founder Jack O'Neill's beachside abode. Look for the usual mix of performance products and fashion-y clothes and accessories. And check out the artwork from O'Neill employees.
