Watch: Filmmaker Tells The Real Story Of The Egyptian Revolution

The Real Story Of The Egyptian Revolution

Throughout history, successful revolutions have been defined by their effective overthrow of an oppressive regime. But what becomes of a revolution when the dictators are gone and powerful interests continue to threaten the political sovereignty of protestors?

Such was the case in the Egyptian Revolution.

Set in Cairo’s Tahrir Square, Jehane Noujaim’s “The Square” documents the non-linear narrative of the now infamous coup beginning with the 2011 overthrow of military leader Hosni Mubarak through the ousting of President Mohammed Morsi in 2013. In an interview with HuffPost Live, which aired October 24, the Egyptian native revealed the inspiration behind the riveting film.

“Well I think the first time people started questioning about why we were still there was after Mubarak stepped down when we continued filming because many films about what happened ended with Mubarak stepping down,” she explained. “But there were a few very dedicated protestors…who were saying, ‘This is just the tip of the iceberg. This is a deep regime that needs changing.’”

The Netflix original documentary “The Square” is now available for online streaming. Check out the trailer below.
