Rebecca Zahau's Body Exhumed For Second Autopsy

Second Autopsy For Woman Found Nude, Bound And Hanged In Mansion

The family of a woman who allegedly committed suicide inside her boyfriend's mansion says the case is not closed.

A Southern California coroner ruled that Rebecca Zahau -- whose nude body was found hanging from a balcony with her wrists and ankles bound -- committed suicide in July. But the family enlisted a famed pathologist to perform a second autopsy on Friday, because they believe she was murdered, TV station KFMB reports.

Dr. Cyril Wecht, who performed an autopsy on Anna Nicole Smith and was part of the investigations into JonBenet Ramsay and O.J. Simpson, examined Zahau's exhumed remains in Pittsburgh, according to KGTV.

Autopsy results will be given to the family in seven to 10 days and will be discussed on the Dr. Phil Show next month.

Zahau was 32 when her body was found in July inside the Coronado, Calif. home of her boyfriend and pharmaceuticals tycoon Jonah Shacknai.

Zahau died two days after Shacknai's son Max, 6, injured himself in a fall down stairs while she was looking after him. The boy died later that week.

Zahau's death was ruled a suicide by investigators in September, the Associated Press reported. But CNN previously reported that Wecht doubted the findings and believed "four bruises found on the top of the head indicate trauma not readily explained by the July hanging."

After the coroner's ruling, Shacknai wrote a letter to California's Attorney General requesting that the suicide finding be given a second review.

"I believe the only way to achieve some dignified resolution for everyone who has been touched by the horrible events of this summer will be through the efforts of your office," Shacknai wrote in the letter obtained by the AP.
