Why Mom's Restriction Of Rebellious Teen Daughter's Phone Isn't Working

When Jade was 14, her mom, Rhonda, says she caught her daughter sending naked photos to a boy. That’s when Rhonda started implementing strict rules. “Jade’s phone gets turned off at 11:00 p.m. and gets turned back on at 7:00 a.m., and it’s on restriction between 4:30 and 6:30," Rhonda explains. "I’ve deleted her contacts. She can’t take pictures, she can't access any new apps, no Internet access. Because Jade has made bad choices in the past, I am overprotective of her.”

Jade, now 18, says, “It’s been crazy since I was 13 years old. She treats me like I’m 2.”

But Rhonda says she has every reason to be concerned about Jade. "She is putting herself out for danger," she says, pointing out that her daughter dresses provocatively and wears makeup "like a drag queen." Recently, she also discovered that Jade started a telephone relationship with a guy in jail.

“I didn’t think it was a big deal,” Jade says. “He wasn’t, like, in jail for killing someone — he was just in jail for selling drugs ... We were calling each other every day. I was planning to see him after he got out of prison."

Rhonda admits she “went ballistic," screamed at her daughter, and took away Jade’s cell phone. “She has access to nothing,” she says.

“My mom says she’s protective and loves me, but I think she’s crazy,” Jade says.
