I am one of those types of people who likes to touch my media. I would rather flip through a magazine than read one online (although I do like Zinio). I prefer curling up in bed with a book and feeling the paper between my fingers over reading it on my Kindle.
Okay. In defense of Kindles and Kindle lovers around the world, I don't own one so I can't actually say I don't like it. I just don't think I would enjoy it as much.
And as much as I use my Spotify premium account and listen to music on it every day, there is something special about vinyl. There is a certain care put into handling it properly, the way light reflects off those perfect music-containing grooves, and its trademark crackles that give it a distinct and romantic sound.
You often get more out of your vinyl than from your digital downloads too. Many bands release albums that may have special inserts like lyrics, art, or even coloring books. Colors range from the typical black to creamy yellow, neon yellow, translucent purple, and aquamarine. They are often collectible and have quickly become a part of our home décor because, well, they even look cool. If you could see my ultra-hip monkey and banana shower curtains you would know that I always try to design the house so things look cool.
Or my kids love monkeys. Either or.
Vinyl. You either get it or you don't. If you don't get it you should purchase a record player at your earliest convenience (like this one that is inexpensive for getting started) and give it a chance. I can pretty much assure you that if you have a love for music then this will be a worthwhile investment-turned-obsession.
April 21, 2012 is Record Store Day, a prime time to begin your journey on the LP path or press forward with your goal of acquiring more. It's also a fantastic time to get out and support your local record stores. Buy local. It's a great thing to do and your community will appreciate it. My local store is Tom's Music Trade and if you're ever in the Susquehanna Valley in Pennsylvania then I recommend you check it out.

- Some of these releases will have a very limited supply or only available in certain areas (rare and collectible)
- Some will be pre-releases, giving you first opportunity to own a new album
Get out there and participate on Record Store Day! Grab some good stuff, take it home, and enjoy listening to your bounty. Some locations will also have events during the day. Check with your local shop to see what they're doing.
