Red Lipstick Tips: How To Pick The Right Shade For Your Skin Tone (VIDEO)

We're here to help.

Red lipstick is sort of always having a moment. The classic look is timelessly gorgeous, but for a lot of women it's a daunting prospect. The biggest question usually ends up being "Is this the right shade for my skin tone?" Fear of looking garish or not even knowing where to start with colors are both legitimate concerns. And indeed, not all reds are created equal. While it will take some ground work to find your best shade, there are a few important guidelines to set you down the right path, color-wise.

As we see in the video above, if you have an olive skin tone, look for orangey or tomato reds. Cooler skin? Try a shade with pink or blue tones. Though a true, true red will look great on everybody.

Once you've found your color, exfoliate lips to prevent dryness and cracking. Next, apply a touch of concealer to provide an even base -- your own natural lip color can actually alter the hue. With a lip pencil in a complementary shade, fill in lips entirely. This will make color last longer, as well as prevent the dreaded ring-around-the-mouth effect. Apply lipstick, then blot with tissue.
