It's not over until it's over. Not even when you've got a two-run lead over an opponent who is down its last strike in the bottom of the 10th inning.
Red Sox fans understand this fact much better than most fan bases. Yes, they've won World Series championships in 2004 and 2007, but any fan old enough to remember Fenway before the Green Monster Seats should have a deep reservoir of heartbreak to keep them grounded.
Nevertheless, Boston Globe writer Dan Shaughnessy may have gotten a little ahead of himself on the NESN broadcast mere hours before the team's epic collapse and Tampa Bay's miraculous comeback.
"I think the Rays are not going to win tonight," said the representative of Red Sox Nation who once authored a book titled The Curse Of The Bambino. "I think that the one thing that we have eliminated tonight is that the Red Sox season is not going to end tonight. They live to play another day."
For context, Shaughnessy made these comments while the Red Sox were clinging on to a 3-2 lead and the Rays were down 7-0. During Boston's September swoon Shaughnessy said the Sox weren't worthy of the postseason. He may have helped prove his point.
