Redskins, Rams Trade: Draft Picks Deal To Bring Robert Griffin III To DC Confirmed

Redskins, Rams Confirm Blockbuster Draft Deal

The Washington Redskins and St. Louis Rams have confirmed that they have made a trade involving draft picks that will likely bring Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III to FedEx Field. The day after Jay Glazer of Fox Sports first tweeted about the agreed upon trade, the general managers of the Redskins and Rams issued a joint statement confirming that a deal had been struck:

In order to execute each of our club’s plans for free agency and the upcoming draft, we have agreed to a trade between our two teams for the second pick in the 2012 draft. We will submit this trade to the NFL for approval.

The statement appears on both the Redskins' website as well as the Rams' website. While the statement appeared on the Skins' site around noon on Saturday without any additional details, the Rams' website published a story about an hour later that breaks down the terms of the deal. According to Nick Wagoner, a senior writer at Rams.com, the Rams are sending Washington the No. 2 pick in the 2012 NFL Draft in exchange for the No. 6 overall pick this year, the team's first-round pick next year and in 2014 as well as the Redskins' second-round pick this year.

News of the trade broke on Friday evening when Glazer tweeted about the deal.

Glazer later reported that the Redskins intend to use the acquired No. 2 selection to add the Baylor star to the roster. With the first overal selection the Indianapolis Colts will very likely select Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck to replace Peyton Manning, who parted ways with the team earlier this week.

When Manning first became available, it was reported that the Redskins intended to make an "aggressive effort" to sign the four-time MVP. However, it was later reported that Manning was not interested in coming to Washington. Rather than risk being left empty handed once Manning makes his decision, the Redskins made a bold move to acquire RG3.
