Priebus To GOP: Don't 'Act Like Old Testament Heretics'

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus hasn't changed his position on same-sex marriage, but he said Monday that his party needs to modernize.

"I don't believe we need to act like Old Testament heretics," Priebus said on USA Today's Capital Download.

Priebus, who has questioned his party's rigidity on social issues, added that the GOP needs to invite those with different views to have a voice in the party, particularly on the issue of same-sex marriage.

"We're not going to agree on every issue," Priebus said. "It doesn't mean that we need to divide and subtract people from our party."

Priebus has criticized his party at other times over the past few months, as well, spearheading a GOP "rebranding" that calls for the GOP to adjust its stance on social issues, among other things.

Priebus' words of advice came a day before the Supreme Court was set to hear arguments Tuesday on California'sProposition 8 gay marriage ban. On Wednesday, the court will consider the federal Defense of Marriage Act.
