Reluctant Rebel reveals a cultural touchstone and the story of one woman to motivate today’s women to take action to change the political and cultural environment threatening reproductive and women’s rights. Sherri Chessen's life seemed ideal with expectations of marriage, children, success in a TV career and security. Instead, Sherri reinvented herself time and again to overcome many obstacles, rebelled, and helped girls and women gain an understanding of the life ahead and choices they face. This book will be available in 2017.

Synopsis:

Reluctant Rebel tells the life story of Sherri Chessen in the context of the significant progress in women’s autonomy and legal rights gained during her lifetime. Sherri is best known for having what became known as “the abortion heard around the world” in 1962. It was the focus of a LIFE magazine cover story and prompted Pope John XXIII to call her a “murderer”. The abortion story, which involves Sherri fleeing to Sweden to have her operation, losing her job, encountering threats and hate mail from people across the globe, and being given protection by the FBI, has been the subject of documentaries, feature films and newspaper and magazine stories—most recently in 2016. Yet, Sherri has experienced so much else in her life and fought for so many of the rights and freedoms that all women enjoy today, that her full story deserves to be told.
