I felt grown up. -- Felicity Huffman
I was the last one of all my friends to do it. - Regina King
It was the summer of love, 1968. - Tyne Daly
I did a lot of research on positions I liked. - Angie Harmon
No, not that first time... These women are talking about the first time they VOTED in a series of dramatic new Public Service Announcement spots created by filmmaker Julie Bergman and Women's Voices. Womens Vote (link) - a campaign designed to reach the 20 million single women who DID NOT VOTE in the last election. Yes, that's right, 20 million women. We can't let that happen again.
The spots made me cry. I think it was the line, "We don't have to dream about the future. We can wake up and vote for it," that got me the most.
With any talk about "future," I always think about my kids, and in this particular instance, I imagined my daughters, someday, figuring out the issues and voting for what they believe.
The PSAs have got to go everywhere. Put them on your blogs, send them to your friends, call your local TV stations and tell them they have to air them. They are fabulous, moving, beautifully produced and motivating beyond belief.
The coolest thing about these spots, and about what Women's Voices, Women's Vote (www.wvwv.org) is doing, is it gives us a chance - right now - to be a part of the solution. As one of the spots points out, we have the power, if we choose to use it.
Check back here to see more PSAs and for updates as we count down to election day.
Make sure to comment here if you link the PSAs to your blog, we will keep a running list.
In the meantime, visit www.wvwv.org for voter registration, buttons and banners for blogs and other cool functionality, like a "tell friends to vote" tool.
And keep saying that astonishing statistic, "20 million single women did not vote in the last presidential election," out loud, because if we spread the word enough, they might have a "first time" too.
