A true trailblazer in the sultry novel genre, Jackie Collins died this past Saturday. She was 77. "I never pretended to be a literary writer," she once said. "I'm a school dropout." In fact, the woman who was kicked out of her boarding school for smoking wrote 31 books (all in longhand with a felt tip pen). And her novels about the steamy side of Hollywood glamour sold more than 500 million copies.

Over the years Collins made some interesting observations about her life and work. As she told the Telegraph: "On my tombstone, I want to have the words: 'She gave a lot of people a lot of pleasure'."
