René “Residente” Pérez has a not so subtle message for the FBI -- and for every major government and news organization in the World for that matter.
The lead singer of the Puerto Rican duo Calle 13 plans to meet with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in London on Thursday for a collaborative songwriting session in which the two -- and Residente’s nearly 5 million Twitter followers -- will write a song addressing media manipulation and freedom of expression.
“Greeting FBI! I’m here with Julian #Assange founder of @wikileaks. Tomorrow we will write together. With you. 10pm London time,” the 35-year-old star tweeted on Wednesday during his initial meeting with the man behind the controversial website known for publishing classified information from government and media organizations worldwide.
Pérez is known for his politically driven lyrics and activism both in his native Puerto Rico and abroad. On Thursday night, the artist will join Assange in the Ecuadorian Embassy, where the Australian has been granted asylum.
“We support Assange because he is a victim of media manipulation,” Residente said in a press release. “He is accused of releasing information to which we should have had access, because we deserve to be well informed. He brought out in the open a lot of people and he’s being blamed for that, when it is not Assange who is killing people. Assange just revealed information about what governments are doing. Those who do not support him are attacking their own human rights, fundamental rights.”
On June 8, the artist first reached out to his fans on Twitter to help collectively write a new song with a special guest. On Thursday night (5 p.m. EST), Pérez will send out a music segment and a verse for reference via his Twitter account and enlist the help of his followers, in real time, to finish the song.
