Repeat After Me: 'I Am My Own Hero'

As a kid, I believed not only in heroes, but superheroes. Maybe because believing in another person who was stronger than me made me feel a little less vulnerable, and a lot more secure. But as soon as I became an adult I realized that none of us ever outgrows vulnerability.

Sure, I've had my share of loss in life -- more than some and less than others. Don't we all have our own crosses to bear? Although, each challenge I faced allowed me to discover another inner layer of myself even more fearful of being vulnerable. As a kid, I believed not only in heroes, but superheroes. Maybe because believing in another person who was stronger than me made me feel a little less vulnerable, and a lot more secure. But as soon as I became an adult I realized that none of us ever outgrows vulnerability. Yes, we are all capable of or susceptible to being wounded or hurt physically, mentally, verbally, emotionally, sexually and/or spiritually.

But look, there's a bright side to our problems, and that's the fact we can choose to be a heel or hero to ourselves. There comes a point in each of our lives where we can no longer blame others or the world at large for our troubles. It's at that very moment you can stand up and become your own hero. You can't always wait for someone else to save you. Trust me, you can save yourself! Just put on your invisible cape and mask to harness the power of unconditional responsibility within yourself. Yes, you may have to begin with zero to become your own hero. You know, you're superhero strong! Not to mention, you already know right from wrong! Yes, your worries may go unnoticed, making you feel shitty. Still you're so resilient, that it's your problems we'll all pity.

There's no doubt in my mind that each of us was born to be our own hero, pure and simple. I, Fiona Finn, have lived through abuse, divorce, bankruptcy, and abandonment during my battle against cancer. I've endured almost every woman's worst fears, yet I ended up discovering my own super powers. Consequently, I chose to reveal all in my memoir RAW: One Woman's Journey through Love, Loss, and Cancer in order to help and inspire others who need hope in rebuilding their lives. For most of my adult life, I wanted a hero to show up and rescue me but not today. I have learned healing is all about taking responsibility for your past, present, and future. Truly, it's all about being your own superhero. So, repeat after me: "I am my own HERO."
