Reporter Unknowingly Investigates Her Own Marriage Proposal

How This Reporter Became The Happy Subject Of Her Own Investigation

Reporter Maryanne Firth was investigating her own wedding proposal -- she just didn't know it.

Firth, a journalist for the Welland Tribune in Welland, Ontario, was reporting on mysterious signs with hearts appearing around town. Then she pursued what seemed to be her biggest lead in unraveling the mystery: new signs next to the old ones announcing a gathering on Sunday in the local park.

The intrepid Firth showed up to witness a man with a heart-painted box covering his head handing out flowers in a tent. She received a flower. Then the kind of thing happened that might even make Woodward and Bernstein weep. The man removed the box, revealing himself to be Firth's boyfriend, Ryan St. Denis.

We'll let Firth take it from here: "Ryan got down on one knee, and as I tried but failed to hold back tears, he asked me to spend the rest of my life with him," she wrote in the Welland Tribune. "No pressure, right? Of course I was ecstatic. Shaking. Crying. Of course I said, Yes!"

It's enough to make this hardboiled newsman break down and ... could someone hand me a hankie?
