Politico reports that the GOP's fortunes are improving as they head into the 2010 midterm elections -- the National Republican Senatorial Committee outraised its Democratic counterpart for the second month in a row.
The NRSC raised $3.08 million last month, beginning September with $5.1 million in its campaign account. The committee also paid off its debt from the most recent election cycle.
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee raised $2.2 million in August but still owes $2.91 million in outstanding loans. It currently has $6.8 million in its campaign account.
According to Politico:
The strong NRSC fundraising performance came during a month when conservative activists protested the administration's policies on health care in town halls across the country. That activism looks like it's translating into the committee's coffers: The NRSC reported over 70,000 first-time donors this year, up significantly from its total last cycle.
