Authorities in Paris abruptly cleared the Place de la République Sunday evening where thousands of mourners had gathered at a vigil, The Associated Press reported.
Witnesses described hearing shots, which turned out to be firecrackers.
Harrowing video shot by BBC news reporter Julia MacFarlane shows a crowd screaming and running en masse. People began trampling the flowers and candles set up at the vigil in an effort to seek cover.
