False Alarm At République Causes People To Run For Their Lives

Someone set off firecrackers, which were mistaken for gunshots.

Authorities in Paris abruptly cleared the Place de la République Sunday evening where thousands of mourners had gathered at a vigil, The Associated Press reported.

Witnesses described hearing shots, which turned out to be firecrackers.

Harrowing video shot by BBC news reporter Julia MacFarlane shows a crowd screaming and running en masse. People began trampling the flowers and candles set up at the vigil in an effort to seek cover.
