One Woman Spent 500 Hours To Rescue This Dog, And It Was Totally Worth It

Kelly Lecain spent a ton of time -- 500 hours, to be exact -- trying to rescue and rehabilitate a deserted dog, but in the end she gained as much from the experience as the pooch she was helping.

Lecain, a volunteer for Pets In Distress, an animal shelter in Davie, Fla., joined HuffPost Live's Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani to share the story of meeting Daisy, the dog that changed her life.

Daisy was dumped on the street by someone who didn't want her, and being left to fend to herself made the pup elusive, aloof and distrustful of humans. After hundreds of hours of work, Lecain gained Daisy's trust, and today Lecain says the journey they took together taught her more than she could ever have expected.

"I've learned patience. Patience is absolutely a virtue with everything -- her rescue, her rehabilitation, physically and emotionally," Lecain said. "And gratitude. So much gratitude from this girl, there's no words to describe."

Daisy's tale of finding her forever home is about as heartwarming as it gets, and Lecain couldn't be happier.

"She's my girl and I'm her mama," she said.
