Retirement Savings Actually Fell Over The Past Year

Despite warnings that Americans aren’t saving enough to carry them through the golden years, worker retirement savings still shrank over the past year.

Even though the average American’s 401(k) balance rose 2 percent since the first quarter of the year, the average account was still down 2.5 percent for the three months ending in June compared to a year ago, according to a Fidelity analysis of 14.2 million people through the end of June.
