Rich Madaleno, Maryland's Gay Senator, Reacts To 'Question 6' Marriage Vote

WATCH: Gay Maryland Senator 'Never Thought' He'd See State's Same-Sex Marriage Victory

Maryland's same-sex marriage victory has personal implications for one state senator.

The Washington Post interviews Rich Madaleno, the first and only openly gay person to serve in Maryland’s State Senate. The 47-year-old Democrat tells the Post that while he and partner Mark Hodge have "no intention of putting our friends through having to buy us another round of gifts from Crate & Barrel," they do plan to get a marriage license.

"We were married 11 years ago," he said. "I never thought I would have the life I have today...as a husband, as a father. I thought it would mean a life in the shadows."
