WASHINGTON -- Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) is running a new 30-second ad that advocates voting President Obama out of office in 2012 because his "socialist policies are bankrupting America."
The ad, titled "Lazy," is running heavily on Fox News. It features a clip of the president saying, "We've been a little bit lazy I think over the last couple of decades." Perry calls that statement "pathetic," adding, "Obama's socialist policies are bankrupting America. We must stop him now."
"As President Obama continues to make excuses for our nation's economic struggles, apologizing for America and disparaging Americans by calling us lazy, soft and un-ambitious, Gov. Perry is offering solutions to reverse the damage inflicted by this out-of-touch administration," Ray Sullivan, communications director for the Perry campaign, said in a statement. "This ad underscores Gov. Perry's priority to overhaul Washington through common-sense measures including a balanced budget amendment and reducing Congressional salaries."
Conservatives have been hitting Obama for his comment in recent days, but he was actually referring to policymakers -- not the American public -- for not attracting enough businesses.
"We've been a little bit lazy, I think, over the last couple of decades," said Obama during a recent speech at a business forum in Hawaii. We've kind of taken for granted, well, people will want to come here and we aren't out there hungry, selling America and trying to attract new businesses into America."
This isn't the first time that Perry has leveled the "socialist" charge at Obama. In 2009, he said that "this is an administration hell-bent toward taking American towards a socialist country."
In a September interview with Time, Perry stood by that remark, saying, "I still believe they are socialist. Their policies prove that almost daily. Look, when all the answers emanate from Washington D.C., one size fits all, whether it's education policy or whether it's healthcare policy, that is, on its face, socialism."
The New York Times recently reported that the Perry campaign had bought $1 million worth of ad time on Fox News.

Rick Perry: "Can you believe that? That's what our President thinks is wrong with America? That Americans are lazy?"
"That's pathetic. It's time to clean house in Washington."
"It's time for a Balanced Budget Amendment that forces Washington to stop overspending."
"If Congress balks, cut their pay and send them home."
"Obama's socialist policies are bankrupting America. We must stop him now."
"I'm Rick Perry. I approve this message."
