Rick Perry On Newt Gingrich Vice President Slot: 'I Got A Better Gig Where I Am'

Rick Perry Not Interested In VP Slot

Texas Gov. Rick Perry's interest in a Washington role appears to be waning.

Two months after Perry's bid for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination came to a close, talk surfaced regarding a possible spot as Newt Gingrich's running mate. A top Gingrich aide quickly quelled those rumors, and in a Thursday interview on Fox News' "Fox and Friends," Perry did as well.

"Texas governor versus VP?" Perry said. "The balance on that one isn't even close. I would suggest to you that's deep in the rumor category, and I got a better gig where I am, thank you."

Upon dropping out of the GOP presidential race on Jan. 19, Perry endorsed Gingrich and returned home to Texas.

"I have come to the conclusion that there is no viable path to victory for my candidacy in 2012," Perry said in North Charleston, S.C. -- 48 hours before Palmetto State voters headed to the polls. "I believe Newt is a conservative visionary who can transform our country."

Gingrich welcomed Perry's words, saying at a separate event that he was "very honored and very humbled" to receive his backing. The former House speaker ended up winning South Carolina's primary. But since then, he has struggled, capturing no states except for his home state of Georgia.
