Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) defeated former Florida Gov. Charlie Crist (D) in one of the nation's most competitive gubernatorial contests Tuesday.

Scott, who was first elected in 2010, was considered vulnerable over his refusal as governor to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, among other issues. Crist is known for having been a Republican when he was governor. He switched to the Democratic Party in December of 2012.

The race between Scott and Crist was one of the country's most expensive: television spending had already topped $50 million by mid-September.
