There's never been a shortage of hidden talent roaming around New York City's subways. Remember that guy who gave a moving performance of Adele's "Someone Like You" at 86th Street? Or that band, Atomic Tom, and their iPhone app song that went viral after it was showcased on the B train?
But if the guy singing a spot-on rendition of "Jessie's Girl" in Penn Station sounded a bit too much like Rick Springfield, that's because it actually was actually him. (The crowds of people holding up their cell phones may well have been a tip-off.)
The artist behind the 1981 hit was singing some old favorites around New York City subways to promote his new album, "Songs for the End of the World," Gothamist reports.
Springfield didn't just play the one tune in Penn Station, though; he also sang "I Hate Myself" in Times Square and carted his guitar along with him for a more intimate rendition of "Rollover Beethoven" on a 1 train.
The '80s heartthrob and "General Hospital" star also stopped by NBC's "Today" show and told Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb that he had made $3 from fans while singing in the subway.
Springfield also spoke about his new documentary "An Affair of the Heart" and admitted that he hadn't been kind to his fans in the past, but that he has a new appreciation for them these days.
