Ex-Teacher Gets 6 Years In Student's Sex Assault

A former physics teacher in suburban Chicago was sentenced Tuesday to six years in prison after pleading guilty to sexual assaulting an underage student.

Robert Smith, 28, of the 19600 block of Foxford Lane in Mokena, was charged with sexual assault while he was still a teacher at Aurora's Metea Valley High School. The Chicago Tribune reports that Smith was immediately put on administrative leave after he was charged. He later confessed to police that he took the student at least twice to a Naperville hotel.

WLS reports that police began investigating a potentially inappropriate relationship between Smith and the then-16-year-old student in September 2010. He was arrested that October, according to the Associated Press.

Smith will be required to serve at least 85 percent of his sentence, the AP reports.
