He's no John Galliano, but Roberto Cavalli may feel the heat for some rather peculiar comments he made last Thursday at an event in London, as reported by Vogue UK.
While being interviewed by Colin McDowell as part of the "In Conversation" series, Cavalli declared, "In my planet, fashion, I'm the only straight man."
Might want to check your intel on that one, Signore Cavalli. McDowell tried to dig a bit deeper with the designer... and ended up with this:
RC: "In my planet, fashion, I'm the only straight man."
CM: "There's a few."
RC: "Who?"
CM: "Ralph Lauren, he's straight."
RC: "Are you sure?"
CM: "So, does being straight make you a better designer?"
RC: "Yes, maybe. Because I think of how I would like to have a woman close to me, in that moment. The femininity, the softness. Maybe, yes, anyway I'm happy as I am."
It's not the first time that Cavalli has sounded off on his love for women -- he previously told Harper's Bazaar in a quite amusing profile that his love for fashion and beautiful women overlap:
"Of course I think about a beautiful woman to dress, because that's my way," he says with a shrug. Is there a difference? "Yes," he says. "I don't masturbate thinking about fashion."
Maybe if McDowell had had that quote in front of him, he wouldn't have felt compelled to add this follow-up comment: "I think there must be a little bit of gayness in you, given the way you design for men." (What does "a little bit of gayness" even mean?)
