Christy, a single mom to a 23-year-old son, was recently selected as the winner of Robin McGraw’s “Walk a Day In Robin’s Shoes” online fundraiser. Robin, who teamed up with Omaze to raise money for her foundation When Georgia Smiled, which helps women, children and men who are victims of domestic violence, surprises Christy to let her know the exciting news.
“Congratulations!” Robin tells her. “There were thousands and thousands of people who donated, and you are the winner of the grand prize!”
“I am so excited. Nothing like this has ever happened to me before. This is the first time I’ve ever won anything,” Christy exclaims. “You just don’t know what this means to me. You just don’t.”
Christy, who says she is not a victim, but instead, calls herself a “survivor” of domestic violence, says she learned about the campaign while watching Dr. Phil and made a $10 donation right away. “All my life, I’ve never understood why women would stay in abusive relationships. Now, I understand. I was in an abusive relationship with an ex-boyfriend,” she tells Robin. She says that her ex was nice in the beginning but soon, his behavior started to change. “At first, he was verbally abusive. Then, one afternoon, he got really upset. He grabbed me by the arm and pushed me up against the kitchen counter. He put a knife to my throat and threatened to kill me, threatened to kill my son. He put his gun to my head, and all I could think was, he’s going to kill me,” Christy reveals. “I finally made the decision to leave him when his abuse turned toward my son. He grabbed my son and he started strangling my son. To get him off, I bit him on the arm. We ran, I got in my car, and we left.”
“As hard as it was, I know I made the right decision to leave, and I’m in a much better place now,” Christy continues.
“I applaud your bravery and courage, because I understand it’s very, very hard to do,” Robin says.
